Research Statement

The main topic of my researches are currently adaptive traits in freshwater rays and skates. They include the potamotrygonids in South America and several species in the family Dasyatidae from Western Africa and Southeast Asia. The aim of this research is to analyse new fossil material and their fossil record with modern methods and to establish phylogenetic frameworks using molecular marker sequences and morphological traits to infer cladogenetic events by employing molecular clock methods, which are calibrated with fossil occurences. This gives the ability to reconstruct evolutionary pathway of this freshwater neoselachians and to identify reasons for freshwater adaptions.

Other topics of my researches are Late Jurassic fish and marine reptile faunas from Northwestern Poland as well as Middle Jurassic sharks and bony fishes from Kyrgyzstan.
