The focus of my research project is on the evolution of diversity within the speciose squaliform family of Etmopteridae or Lantern Sharks. Using a combinded approach of both molecular and morphological data, I hope to (1) establish a first comprehensive phylogeny of the family, (2) to test hypotheses about the chronology and nature of the presumably rapid radiation of the family using fossil data as calibration points for a molecular clock approach, and (3) to provide species (re-)descriptions and biogeographic data for some species. During the first year of my dissertation, I travelled to Japan, Chile and New Zealand for attaining the necessary samples for my labroratory work, the second year is devoted predominantly to lab work and phylogenetic analysis. |
