Research Statement
In the most general sense, my research program uses analytical disciplines of comparative biology in fossil and living cartilaginous and bony fishes to elucidate the diversification, extinction, quality of the fossil record, shapes of phylogenies, adaptive radiation and biogeographic patterns of extinct and modern marine fishes. Consequently, the approach used is an interdisciplinary one including phylogenetic (cladistic) analyses to establish organismal interrelationships, and diversity and extinction analyses to reconstruct global and local diversity patterns. Rates of origination and extinction and the simple completeness metric are used to scrutinize effects of extinction events and the quality of the fossil record on fishes. Four main topics form the focus of my current research: |
1. Evolution and phylogenetic patterns of Mesozoic and Cenozoic fishes. The phylogeny of Mesozoic and Cenozoic neoselachians and non-teleostean neopterygians (e.g. Pycnodontiformes) is explored using cladistic principles. The basis for the phylogenetic analyses are morphological and molecular data. The aim is to develop a comprehensive phylogeny of Mesozoic to extant neoselachians and selected actinopterygian groups employing total evidence approaches. |
2. Evolutionary traits and adaptive radiation patterns of neoselachians. Three projects currently explore special adaptations of deep-water dogfish sharks (Squaliformes), freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygonidae, Dasyatidae), and filter-feeders (Rhincodon, Cetorhinus, Megachasma, Mobulidae). These projects are dedicated to the reconstruction how, why, and when special adaptations in neoselachians occurred. Data employed include multiple mitochondrial and nuclear molecular sequences that are analysed with parsimony and Bayesian methods and molecular clock approaches for dating cladogenetic events in the evolutionary history of these sharks. The results derived from molecular analyses will be checked with morphological characters that are used for taxonomic purposes for identifying useful morphological character traits. |
3. Ontogeny and phylogeny of sharks, skates, and rays. The early ontogeny of modern sharks (e.g., Chlamydoselachus) is studied for obtaining additional information and insights into the evolution of elasmobranches and for helping determining characters for phylogenetic analyses. |
4. One of the major issues of my research is to analyse diversity fluctuations and paleobiogeographic distribution patterns of fossil and extant neoselachians using results from phylogenetic analyses but also robust statistical procedures (e.g., rarefraction, subsampling. This part of my on-going research thus is directed at measuring the diversity and extinction by applying modern analytical techniques and at elucidating the impact of a-biotic events (e.g. climatic changes, extinction events, closing/opening of seaways) triggering diversity changes. |
