Research Statement

In my thesis I will focus on the phylogeographic relationships of the of the angel shark genus Squatina and its species based on mitochondrial markers like 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). The examined specimens include fresh tissue samples fixed in ethanol collected by different researchers and stored in different cooperating institutions as well as the historic material from our museum collection. Since the amount of Squatina specimens in the Museum für Naturkunde collection is really small the tissue sampling is restricted to institutional gifts and loans as well as intended visits to other European museum collections (e.g. NHM London, MNHN Paris), which occupy a major part of Squatina holotypes.
